Bloom

These are flowers photographed close, in soft light, so near that the edges of the frame fall away. What interests me is not the whole flower but the way light moves through a petal, the way white is never only white, the small warm center that holds everything together.

I work slowly here, the same way I do in a landscape. Waiting for the light to be right, adjusting by very little, looking until the shape resolves.

Flowers are usually photographed for their brightness. I am after something quieter: the softness just before the color arrives, and the sense that this openness will not last long.

Each photograph is available as an archival pigment print in an edition of ten, printed by me on Hahnemühle German Etching paper. Prints are signed and numbered, and sizes are available on request.
