Encounters

A horse at a fence. Swans on cold water. Birds gathered on a stone at the edge of a lake. None of these were arranged. I was already there, moving slowly through a place, and an animal was there too.

What holds my attention is the moment of mutual awareness, when the animal registers me and I register it, and neither of us moves. There is a stillness in that pause I have never been able to photograph any other way than by waiting for it.

These photographs are about proximity more than wildness. The animals in them live near people, at the edges of parks and fields and shorelines, sharing the same ordinary places.

Each photograph is available as an archival pigment print in an edition of ten, printed by me on Hahnemühle German Etching paper. Prints are signed and numbered, and sizes are available on request.
